Loved this post, Ryan. Saw you present in the RR club and Selena Soo actually forwarded this to me because we talk about YouTube the exact same way...long-term leverage, especially if you want to position yourself as a thought leader or expert in your field (we call it the "Anti-Viral YouTube strategy"...recently did a YT video on it: https://youtu.be/fPoRum_ul0g?si=7izYOgwkkLw3o_mN) I love how you articulated it all here and shared your results...ended up subscribing to your Substack. Looking forward to more.
Hey Auret! Thanks for the subscribe here :-) I checked out your YT video and enjoyed it - the example you shared about the lawyer really resonated. The way I've articulated the question is: "Are you chasing attention, or cultivating influence?" (For me it's the latter).
But if I'm totally honest, I still have moments of doubt when my videos get a few hundred views (hyper targeted to my perfect person) versus tens of thousands of views (like I've seen in the past, when I've created content designed to have a wider appeal.)
Hey Ryan, thanks for checking out the video! Yes, for us it's also the latter. But I totally get it - it's easy to have doubt when going down this path because it's wayy less views. And we're taught that 'more views is better' but it's not always the case/really depends on your goal. We often share this example of a past client, we were managing their channel at the time - they had less than 100 views on their video (less than 1K subs at the time) and they ended up making a $10K sale from that video because, after watching it, someone bought their mentorship program...and they weren't doing a hard pitch or anything, it was just valuable educational content that resonated. We say something similar to the quote you shared: "You are not here to chase attention. You're here to create resonance."
I'd rather have 100 views of the right person watching than 10,000 views from people who are just browsing....but not everyone feels this way. They question whether you know how YouTube works because they see 'low views' and don't believe it's an intentional choice lol (Roberto Blake went through something similar).
Totally! I like to imagine if you had 100 views - and every one of those views is your absolute ideal customer - that's actually LOT of people. Love all that you're putting out around this topic!
100%! Good chatting with ya - love this stuff. Just putting this out there - if you'd like to be a guest on our channel sometime and do a live together, we'd love to have you. Let me know :)
